Lawrence Lindell (he/they) is a cartoonist, educator, musician and artist from California. Lindell received his BFA in Digital Media with an emphasis in 2D animation/illustration from Otis College of Art and Design and his MFA in Comics from California College of the Arts. Lindell is known to focus on Blackness, mental health and queerness in his work. 

Having made comics since 12 years of age, Lindell transitioned to creating comics professionally over the last 7 years. He contributes to The New Yorker, SF Examiner, and Razorcake, and has been involved with DIY publishing for over a decade. His self-published work has been featured in museums, art exhibitions and nominated for the Believer Book Awards, and the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics. Lindell founded Laneha House with his spouse Breena Nuñez where they publish comics from themselves and cartoonists online through their Open Mic series. Their periodical series Laneha House has been nominated for the Broken Frontier Award and they received the CCS BIPOC Cartoonist Fund Grant. Through Laneha House he cofounded the Kinnard Awards in 2022 to honor pioneering Black queer cartoonist, Rupert Kinnard. 

Lindell is the creator of Blackward a graphic novel published by Drawn and Quarterly that has been nominated for the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics, the Broken Frontier Award, GLAAD Media Award, Lambda Literary Award and the Jacqueline Woodson Award for LGBTQ+ Children’s/YA Literature. Lindell is also the creator of Buckle Up a middle-grade graphic novel published by RH Graphic. Lindell is the recipient of many grants, fellowships, has been a special guest at several comics shows. They served as a juror for Prism Comics, LA Zine Fest and has spoken on numerous comic and zine panels. 

He has been teaching zine and comics/cartooning workshops and classes both online and in person since 2012. 

When he is not creating comics, music or touring, he is usually spending time with his spouse and kid, drinking coffee, and planning his next few projects.
